Save our Music Department

Save our Music Department
The Issue
As of December 8th, 2020 the student body of The College of Saint Rose received a heartbreaking email. As a result of a financial deficit and the Covid-19 Pandemic, The College of Saint Rose has decided to cut 16 majors from various departments. The department that happened to get hit the hardest was the Music Department. The department specialized in four different degrees, Music Education (K-12) B.S., Music Performance B.M., Music Industry B.S., and a Bachelors of Music B.A. The college has since decided to cut a majority of the programs degrees; Music Education, Music Performance, and Bachelors of Music, leaving the Music Industry program as the only standing offer for students looking to pursue a degree in music at the college. The removal of these programs comes as another blow to the department as not long ago the college also cut the master's program for Music Education around 2015/ 2016. One of the main selling points of this college and what set it apart from other colleges in the Albany, NY area was the college offering specialized degrees.
The history of the College emphasized the professional training of teachers for which it is renowned even today, along with a diverse offering of majors and programs. In the Colleges' mission statement, the college states that it delivers distinctive and comprehensive liberal arts and professional programs that inspire its graduates. By removing the majority of the liberal arts programs this has thus gone against the colleges' origins and mission statement.
As one of our alumni said best:
"Anyone who teaches music knows the fight we endure. Every day, we defend our programs, our methods, and our students’ opportunity to learn. We prove over and over again that music and arts have value, and that the fine arts change lives. I firmly believe that the arts are what make us human. They build connections in ways nothing else can. Every day, we as music educators say the same things: music is math, science, history, literature, foreign language, and most importantly, inherently important in and of itself. These values were instilled in me by a faculty of the greatest professors I could have ever had the pleasure of learning from. Today, Saint Rose told us that they don’t believe in music. It’s clear the institution doesn’t understand the gravity of what it’s lost."
The purpose of this petition is to garner enough support and attention to The College of Saint Rose in hopes to save our Music Program.
We will not go down without a fight!
