Native American and Indigenous peoples are an integral part of our history and culture, and yet are largely invisible in the instutions of higher education. Creating a Native American and Indigenous Studies Department (NAIS Department) at the Claremont Colleges would be an important step in giving a voice and place to indigenous peoples and issues, and decolonizing education here at the 5Cs. A NAIS Department would promote diversity, expand research and knowledge, support local indigenous communities, and increase the social justice work of the colleges.
