Demand Bold Climate Goals Become City Policy

The Issue

The City of South Lake Tahoe (CSLT) is already experiencing the effects of climate change locally through increased temperatures, loss of snowpack and extreme wildfire, all of which threaten our economy, residents, wildlife and overall quality of life.

Passing an updated and bolder resolution will mean SLT is pursuing the most ambitious renewable energy goal of any city in the country.  By committing to eliminate carbon emissions by 2030 with 100% renewable energy, 24/7, we will be able to achieve a fully decarbonized, clean energy grid for all time periods.

The transition to a 24x7 zero-carbon community reliant on the efficient use of a mix of carbon-free renewable energy resources will provide a range of benefits including reduced greenhouse gas emissions, improved air quality, enhanced public health, increased national and energy security, local green jobs, and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.

South Lake Tahoe sees millions of tourists every year and while we have laid the foundation to better our own community, we also have the potential to lead as an example for thousands of others.  With this resolution, we can achieve greatness from our doorsteps.
