Save the BEES and PROTECT the boulevard at 512 Boyle Avenue
The Issue
"A native landscape, vital bee habitat, and popular photo spot for numerous tourists at risk due to small town politicians. Meanwhile in Victoria, public spaces (boulevards included) are encouraged to be used for green, garden and native plant space---why the disparity? Please spread the word and let's get support for keeping urban spaces available for native gardens like the rest of the progressively GREEN communities (such as the capital region district)" --Erica Maltby
The boulevard at 512 Boyle is more than an extension of my parent's yard that they have poured countless hours into. It is a vital habitat for insects and small animals and birds, it is a beautiful backdrop in photos (prom, weddings, tourists alike!), it is an example of the sustainable GREEN community we should be striving for in a time of drastic climate change and ever warming summers.
Did you know the Mayor offered to sell the boulevard to my dad? The mayor then said the glacier condo residents would then have the rights to buy the PUBLIC green space in front of their condos--for the sake of nature lovers and all Revelstoke residents my father turned down this offer as the caveat to loose the beautiful green space as a public area was not fair. (also probably illegal)
This requires public notice as well as public education. The public green space in question is the beautiful open green space behind our home (Where the two public benches are with the lovely view of McPherson/begbie/boulder). That green space has hosted weddings, friendly gatherings, prom pictures, etc--and the mayor suggested that if my father bought the rights to the boulevard, that public space would be sold to the condo owners.
Let's speak up, let's show our council and our mayor that Revelstoke wants a sustainable, green community. Remember that "vote for change" thing you did in November? unfortunately not much has changed, let's challenge that--let's create change.
The following words were derived from a 235pg PDF "Official Community Plan Bylaw No. 1950" Found on the city's website. So far I feel the city has failed us and the bees. I've used bold font on the most noteworthy ones.
"Revelstoke will be a leader in achieving a sustainable community by balancing environmental, social and economic values within a local, regional and global context" (pg 13)
"The close connection with the natural environment is an important aspect of life in Revelstoke and environmental stewardship is a community priority" (pg 44) huh, could've fooled me.
"Environmental citizenship and stewardship by families, business, community organizations and governments is encouraged and supported throughout the community" (pg 44)
"Incorporate environmental best practices in all municipal bylaws, regulations, and guidelines" (pg 45)
"Retain and, where possible, enhance the ecosystems and biodiversity within the community and North Columbia area." (pg 47) ...there's a lot from pg 47, so i'll stick with my favourites
"Encourage the use of native plant species in both private and public landscaping while limiting bear hazards, prohibit the use of invasive species and support eradication of existing invasive plants" (pg 47)
"Green roofs, low impact development, and landscaping can help integrate natural systems into the heart of the city and have a positive contribution to the diversity of smaller species including birds and insects" (pg 61)
attached is before and after photos of the yard--at least a 15 year work in progress all at risk of being mowed/torn up. Please help us save this boulevard.
Below is a link to a public album on facebook. You do not need to be a member of facebook to view the album. The album contains many photos of the boulevard at 512, as well as other photos of green boulevards in the Victoria, BC area.
