On February 11, 2022 around 9:30pm on the city streets of Charlotte, NC contracted city bus operator Ethan A. Rivera was brutally shot and killed while operating a city bus in the presence of passengers on board along with innocent bystanders by way of "road rage", where he crashed and later died of his injuries. In light of a recent fallen officer here in this city, the operators were disgruntled and engulfed in an abyss of confusion as to why the loss of life was not represented in the same manner? We as contracted city bus operators are not SAFE! From physical & verbal assaults, stalking, sexual harassment, threats, theft, and shootings & absolutely NO operator should be subject to this type of work environment at any given time. The NC state laws need to be changed as well, because assaults on a bus operator are only misdemeanor charges, unlike other transit systems in other states where the laws & punishment are a Federal offense. Aren't we ALL public servants of this community? Policies, procedures, improper equipment, and NC laws are to blame.
