John Sanders started this petition to The City of Charleston and

The South Carolina Dept. of Transportation in the process of widening Clements Ferry Rd. in Berkeley County will be cutting down a huge historic 16 foot Circumference Live Oak tree and potentially dig up African American Graves. This tree was a center of the Cainhoy/Wando/Huger African American Community and was used as the community meeting spot as part of bringing their culture to this country.  The alternate plan I propose will have the road be Straighter and I think Safer and no graves would be disturbed. No property owners would be harmed by the alternate plan and save more than $ 700,000.00. The City of Charleston is probably the only government agency that can save this tree and graves. Berkeley County and SCDOT ( South Carolina Dept. if Transportation ) say nothing can be done but anyone that visits the site has and will disagree. The SCDOT told me that a small amount of wetlands would be destroyed in the alternate plan so the have to use planned route, wetlands can be created and should not be a justification for taking down this Historic Tree. Info is at the Facebook page“ Save The Meeting Tree “
