My name is ___ and I'm a resident of Berkeley, District ___. I'm calling to urge you to follow the lead of Minneapolis City and LA and defund the Berkeley Police Department. I'm outraged to learn that the 2021 proposed budget allocates 74 million dollars, or 43% of our general fund to Berkeley police at the expense of healthcare, housing, parks, access to food and other vital services. I know the city faces a $28M deficit due to global health crisis that disproportionately impacts Black communitites and I demand that the police face the first and most severe cuts to preserve essential, life-affirming services.
