Bloomington City Council members Dave Rollo and Andy Ruff are proposing an ordinance in the next few weeks to allow for the sharpshooting of “a lot of deer”—the exact number was unspecified--in Griffy Nature Preserve. The main reason council member Rollo gave in support of this plan is to maintain biodiversity in Griffy. The main reasons given in favor of using sharpshooters is that it is purportedly the most effective and humane method for drastically reducing the deer population.

We, the undersigned, do not believe that the end, i.e. the preservation of local biodiversity in Griffy Woods, justifies the proposed means, namely, the taxpayer-funded killing of a currently unspecified number of highly sentient, social mammals in a public “nature preserve.”

First, many of us believe that the value of the lives of these sentient, gentle mammals outweighs the value of local biodiversity in Griffy. Second, the goal of biodiversity may be achieved without sacrificing deer lives through the use of non-lethal methods such as contraception. Third, many of us believe that the public funds that would go toward sharpshooting--likely totaling $30K or more--would be better spent on other public services, such as services for the  homeless, mentally ill, at-risk youth, etc.

We urge the Bloomington City Council to vote 'no' on the Rollo-Ruff ordinance. Let's instead coexist with deer, and find a way to achieve the genuine value of biodiversity in a non-lethal way.
