The citizens demand the extension of the Dunkirk outer break wall to Silver Creek, NY.
The Issue
For years, my friends and neighbors in Dunkirk and Silver Creek, New York, have witnessed the relentless encroachment of Lake Erie’s waters, threatening not only our homes but our very way of life. The shoreline erosion along this 9-mile stretch has become increasingly severe, creating hazards that could soon lead to disastrous consequences for our community and the surrounding state. The state of New York has consistently faced these serious erosion issues, and now, more than ever, we must take action to protect our land and our future.
Erosion is an unstoppable force without proper measures, and the longer we wait, the more of our shoreline we lose. The damage is not only physical but also economic, as properties near these eroding borders see depreciation in value, impacting families for generations. Moreover, the local ecosystems endanger wildlife habitats, further disrupting the natural balance of our region.
Constructing a break wall in Lake Erie, spanning from the outer wall in Dunkirk to Silver Creek, is a feasible and effective solution. With approximately 9 miles of fortification, this structure would act as a protective barrier, significantly reducing the erosion risk and safeguarding our cherished community. Break walls have been successfully implemented in similar scenarios, providing both immediate and long-term relief to affected areas.
Imagine, only non motorized vehicles between the bluffs and the wall. Canoeing, hiking, paddle boats, swan boats, kayaks, paddle boards, tubes and floats. This area would be a destination, an attraction, and more. Eagles would retain their perch trees and nest trees.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, break walls are a proven method to combat shoreline erosion and help maintain the integrity of coastal lands. Implementing this measure would involve collaborating with local and state authorities to secure funding and resources necessary to bring this project to fruition.
By signing this petition, you support the construction of a break wall along Lake Erie's vulnerable stretch to protect hundreds of homes, properties, and wildlife habitats from the devastating effects of continued erosion. We need your help to petition the state of New York and relevant authorities to prioritize this initiative and provide a safer future for residents in Dunkirk, Silver Creek, and surrounding areas.
Please sign now to stand with us in this vital endeavor.
