Justice for People's Leader, Akhil Gogoi

Justice for People's Leader, Akhil Gogoi

The Issue

The gross injustice meted on Assam's leader of the masses, Akhil Gogoi (he has been fighting incessantly for the cause of Sustainable Development in Assam, India and for the rights of the indigenous communities of Assam) who is put behind bars for the last one and a half years because of multiple false allegations against him is disturbing the lives of the common people of the State.

A gloom of fear, suppression and perversion of values pervades. He has been illegally detained by the State High Court, Assam and the NIA (National Investigation Agency) for leading the anti-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) mass movement which had gained tremendous support from the local people as it severely threatens the identities of the indigenous communities of Assam. He is charged of Sedition under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.

Facing the hardest challenges, Akhil Gogoi won a historic victory in the State Assembly Elections on 2nd May’ 2021 by becoming its member while he was in prison. It was a people’s mandate. However, he is now restricted from attending Assembly sessions by being stigmatised as a mental patient.

We humbly appeal to the Chief Justice , Supreme Court of India to release this leader of the masses so that he can perform his duties  in our democratic nation.
