The Chair & members of the NMC council must resign immediately
The Issue
This petition is to call on all current members of the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) to resign with immediate effect. In particular, NMC employees, registrants and most importantly, members of the public can no longer have confidence in Sir David Warren's leadership. As a result of the publication of an independent report into the culture within the NMC, it is clear that Sir David and council members' positions are untenable. We ask that they resign with immediate effect so confidence can be restored.

Nazir Afzal OBE and Rise Associates conducted the review after concerns were raised about the organisation’s culture, including racism and fear of speaking up. The report makes for sobering reading. It found that racism, discrimination, bullying and incompetence are rampant within the NMC. This is not only experienced by the NMC's own staff but also how registrants facing investigation are treated.
The report details how some of the worst crimes committed by nurses went unpunished via fitness to practice processes, with such people allowed to continue to look after vulnerable patients. This was at the same time that good nurses who faced very minor indiscretions wait years and years to have their name cleared, often on dubious charges.
The report shows that the NMC is a dysfunctional organisation presided over by leadership who are not fit for purpose and cannot execute their primary role: protect the public. NMC registrants are held to account for their practice, yet the current (and indeed past) leadership are currently going unaccountable for their significant failings as detailed in the report. As a result, they must resign their positions with immediate effect.
