This week, I shared a deeply personal story in Care Futures: my mother’s fall. In her haste to reach the bathroom, she forgot the caregiver’s instruction to wait in the car. With her short‑term memory now lasting only seconds, she fell forward, fracturing her cheekbone and suffering a subarachnoid hemorrhage.
That moment reminded me of my father’s accident decades ago - and of the fragile safety nets caregivers rely on. Elder care is relentless, unpredictable, and essential. Yet Medicare premiums are rising, ACA subsidies are expiring, and Medicaid work requirements threaten millions.
At the same time, my op‑ed in The Colorado Sun - “Opinion: Colorado caregivers fight for basic rights as billionaires lobby for AI” - highlights how caregivers are fighting for recognition while powerful interests lobby for other priorities.
Together, these stories show why caregiving must be treated as infrastructure. Without it, families, workplaces, and communities cannot function.
