On March 10th, 2018, the African Meeting House on Nantucket Island, Massachusetts was the target of a hate crime in which the N-word was graffitied across the front of the building.

On June 20th, 2019, the Nantucket Police Department turned over the investigation to the Cape & Islands District Attorney’s Office.

It has been more than two years now, and the Nantucket community, and primarily the Black community on the island, have still not received closure from this incident. Additionally, there have been no updates or statements provided by District Attorney Michael O'Keefe and the Massachusetts State Police on the status of the investigation. There are numerous yard signs on the island demanding justice for this case.

In response to the murder of George Floyd by the Minneapolis Police Department on May 25th, 2020, many members of the Nantucket community gathered to peacefully protest racism and racial injustice, as well as to show solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement.

During this protest, one Nantucket community member brought up the African Meeting House hate crime, and how there has seemingly been no progress made thus far. In response to this, the Nantucket Police Department’s Chief was quoted in the June 4th, 2020 edition of The Inquirer and Mirror as saying, “I think I know who did it, to be honest with you, but I don’t have the facts and it’s out of my hands.”

We are requesting an update on the African Meeting House Hate Crime Investigation from DA O'Keefe and the Massachusetts State Police. Additionally, we would like the full resources of the Massachusetts state government to be made available to assist with the investigation.

Please sign this petition so the Nantucket community can get long-delayed justice and answers.
