The imported garbage from Canada has been swept under the rug by the Canadian government. Despite the strong public outcry of the Filipino people to take its trash back to the Canadian soil, our pleas have been ignored. We hope that concrete solutions in respect to international laws have been instituted by the Canadian government just in time for the timely state visit of the President of the Philippines to Canada on May 7-9. Canada is the Philippines’ 21st largest trading partner, its 6th top source market for tourism and is home to almost 700,000 Filipinos. In 2014, Canada announced that the Philippines had been designated a Country of Focus for development assistance, and a Priority Emerging Market for Canadian overseas trade and investment. Sad to say Canada has also exported the most expensive garbage to the Philippines costing the Philippine government a whopping $2,000,000.00 in Canadian currency due to storage and demurrage, and the longest staying close to 3 years. A feat appropriate to take its place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Our representative Atty. Richard Gutierrez to the Basel Convention will report this development and disrespect to International laws on May 4-5 in Switzerland. We urge Prime Minister Stephen Harper to hasten the reimportation of the garbage back to Canada and we hope this will be a priority in the meeting with the Philippine president.
