Concern HIV Activists started this petition to Grazell Howard, Board Chair The Board of the Black AIDS Institute

For 22 years, the Black AIDS Institute has stayed committed to ending the HIV epidemic in Black communities, with Black communities. Synchronized with remarkable scientific progress, we’ve developed lifesaving programs, trained leaders, mobilized and educated communities, and partnered with governments.  The founder of the Black AIDS Institute reflects on the organization's history, purpose and uncertain future in a personal post and call-to-action here.

Today, the current board members are disconnected from the HIV community. The cumulative effect of their failed governance, refusal to ensure that the composition of the board represents the community it serves, and unwillingness to support next-gen leadership or address their harassment complaints that are misaligned with the organization’s values - are all undermining BAI’s evolution.

BAI can only be saved by the HIV community. This generation of leaders and people living with HIV today have to be the change they demand instead of waiting for somebody else to make it happen.

What needs to happen: BAI Board Reconstitution

1.  The Board Chair and the 2nd Vice-Chair must resign immediately!

2.  By December 1, 2021, the remaining 4 board members must deploy a transparent, community-driven process to reconstitute a new board. The new board must include people from this group and the new Executive Committee must have at least three members from the above group.

a.  Black people openly living with HIV/AIDS

b.  Black people currently on PrEP

c.   Black gay men, trans women, and cis women

d.   Current or former BTAN members and AAHU members

e.  Representatives from CBOs or ASOs.

3.  By December 1, 2021, the remaining 4 board members must resign to make way for the newly reconstituted and community-represented board to lead.
