“Time for Change”
As the community mourned the life of Alloura Wells body that laid unknown in the morgue for months and the Largest LGBTQ2S centre in Canada, The 519 Church Street Community Centre failed to show leadership to push for the identity of this person they New about Aug 2017 from the person that found the body and also failed to notify or keep communities safe with this information they kept secret until the information was leaked to other community agencies. As they do understand and facilitate programs for homeless and and at risk Trans people; they showed no empathy for the unknown deceased trans person found and once again re enforced that Trans live don’t matter especially marginalized homeless transwomen of colour.
To the community this is no surprise on the leadership Maura Lawless Executive Director of The 519. Since being ED for 10yrs programs for Trans and marginalized group have failed or disappeared without notification or consultation. Ms Lawless has stopped the outreach program for Transwomen that are homeless or street active which was a service that kept the community connected and safe. She has also cooped the Trans drop in that was designed specifically from past E.D Ms, Kemper for homeless marginalized people that needed a safe space to engage and be themselves. Today this drop in has lost most of their participants due to being run by non trans people and access to cis gendered people that don’t identify as trans.
We asking all community members to support a new Leader that see the integrity and vital leadership in all community member that access the The 519 Church Street Community Centre. This Centre was built on the lives of Marginalized LGBTQ2S people to have welcoming centre to access program and support and have a Executive Director to advocate/supports for all person in our community which Maura Lawless has failed to do but capitalize on marginalized people they serve for donations and funding but has failed to improve or implement new programs for these communities
We the communities and allies are asking the Board of Director to demand Maura Lawless to step down and make room for an Executive Director that see the needs of all people that access the centre
