The Issue

District 95 has formed a new rule against carrying your backpack throughout classes. As a student of Middle School South, I believe that the newly presented backpack stipulation showcases many unnecessary obstacles.

The vast majority of students already own backpacks. The additional expense of binders can add up. Binders are also smaller and more susceptible to damage. If backpacks were permitted, this would not be a problem as they are more durable, effective, and affordable.

Bags also have more capacity to carry supplies. It is an inconvenience for a student to pause their learning experience to traverse toward their designated locker. Students would miss essential learning time to walk around the school to retrieve supplies that would not fit in a binder.

The question brought up is, couldn’t students acquire it during the passing period? A passing period is two minutes long. Students need to go to their locker, use the restroom if needed, and walk to class. If not on time, a student risks detention. Hallways would also be exponentially more crowded with students needing to reach their lockers, creating havoc and chaos. This creates a difficult experience trying to arrive at classrooms safely.

There are pros and cons to allowing backpacks in class, one of which was highlighted in the backpack communication notice sent by District 95 leadership, which is the fire hazard the backpacks can lead to. This can be fixed by having students place their bags underneath their desks. That would alleviate the concern of a potential fire or tripping hazard.

The school day would be smoother and easier with bags allowed. There is no reason to enforce anti-backpack classrooms.

If this becomes a big issue going into the school year it will be emailed to the district offices and discussed. Our  as students should be considered when addressing things that impact us severely such as backpacks it may seem like a minor issue but I can actually inconvenience us more then the district may believe.
