In recent years, we have witnessed a huge increase in the stray population across Bahrain, with an area of only 765 km² there is an estimated 20,000 stray animals, which is growing by population of around 500 a month. It has become an issue that one organization alone can’t handle. Despite the tireless efforts of groups & individuals the stray dogs in the Kingdom are being targeted, they are being hunted down and killed. A team from Bahrain Animal Rescue Centre and Bahrain Strays (Fathiya) went down to the southern area of the Island (Askar) yesterday to feed the ever growing population and were forced to bear witness to the atrocities committed on the defenseless stray dogs, all of who were known to be passive, friendly and well known among the volunteers who go out to feed them.

With over 500 dogs a month being born or dumped in Askar, it has become the perfect breeding ground for animal abusers. The abuse they are met with is due to a general lack of education and compassion for animals. While recreational abuse of animals has also become a common sight across the Kingdom in back streets and alleyways of certain areas, the last 48 hours has revealed a more barbaric form of abuse.

Yesterday, volunteers were met with over 30 dead dogs lying around in Askar, some of whom had been shot/ stabbed and some of whom had been poisoned. The deaths of these animals were no accident and we fear it may keep happening if they are not stopped soon. Their last moments on Earth were painful. No animal should ever be put through this.

Saturday night Bahrain Strays & Barc brought out Dr. Kevin from the 4 Paws Clinic to come and complete an autopsy, when he arrived and was taken to the sites all of the corpses were gone, meaning the killer had called the Municipality who went out to pick them up and dispose of them.

The people involved in the deaths of the dogs seem to believe that they are immune to the consequences and their actions need to be punished. Any modern society cannot stand by and accept the abuse, torture and killing of innocent animals. We are hoping with enough signatures that the government and the correct authorities can do more to ensure this doesn't happen again. The consequences of animal cruelty should be well known and should be properly enforced. We need to raise awareness to ensure the proper treatment of animals, starting with the youngest generations to ensure the hatred is not taught but rather compassion and respect.

I will finish off by saying your crying emojis, your sad Facebook reacts, your "thoughts and prayers" are no longer enough. We ,as a society, have reached a critical breaking point. We can choose to be silent, we can choose to do nothing and we can choose to turn a blind eye, but if that is what you chose to do, you are just as bad as the perpetrator. Animals do not have a voice, they don't have a say in what happens. It is our job to stand up for them and make sure they are heard. Your silence counts as compliance.

To voice your support for improving the situation in the Kingdom of Bahrain, please sign and share this petition so we can bring it to the correct channels and show that people care about this in Bahrain.
