Stop the detention in the Refugee Center in Koksijde and let the children go back to school

Sinds enkele dagen staat de politie voor de ingang van het opvangcentrum in Koksijde. Ze laten niemand naar buiten of naar binnen. Meer dan 100 kinderen mogen niet naar school. De burgemeester van Koksijde eist dat alle bewoners getest worden alvorens ze naar buiten mogen. Fedasil weigert dit, aangezien dit discriminatie inhoudt tegenover de andere bewoners van de gemeente. Inwoners van Koksijde moeten niet getest worden om toestemming te krijgen hun huis te verlaten en toeristen worden met open armen ontvangen.
 
De kinderen in het centrum zitten al meer dan acht weken binnen en nu ze eindelijk terug naar school mogen, wordt hen dit ontzegd. De inwoners worden letterlijk opgesloten. Het lijkt erop dat het coronavirus door het bestuur van Koksijde als excuus gebruikt wordt om vluchtelingen op te sluiten, te intimideren, te stigmatiseren en te discrimineren.
 
Vraag het bestuur van Koksijde de bewoners hun vrijheid terug te geven en de kinderen naar school te laten! They are not criminals, their children are not criminals. This is not a prinson.
 
The mayor of Koksijde, Marc Vanden Busche, announced on 3 june a lockdown for the centre and sent the police. No one is allowed to go inside or outside. The children aren’t allowed to go school.
 
Refugees are not criminals. Their freedom of movement must not be restricted without legal justification. Refugee children are not criminals. They have the right to go to school on a general basis. It makes no sense to test a small group of refugee children if the rest of the children are not tested for coronavirus. This is not a fight against coronavirus. It is pointless and offensive. This is discrimination.
 
Coronavirus was not born at the Refugee Reception Center. And this place is not a leprosarium. Now it seems that coronavirus is being used as an excuse to imprison and intimidate refugees by local authorities in Koksijde.
 
Human rights are universal. They do not change depending on the location of a person and his citizenship. Human rights do not know the differences in skin color, nationality or language.
 
A coronavirus pandemic cannot be an excuse for violating human rights. Reasonable restrictions in each case should have reasonable explanations.
 
Ask the authorities of Koksijde to give the refugees their freedom back and to let the children go back to school!
