The Issue

If you, like many Americans feel helpless from the chaos and destruction our current administration has caused, here’s something you can do. By adding your voice to a like-minded chorus, you can share your feelings with Trump’s global peers. We, ordinary people, have the power to do something our president never does. Through letters and emails signed by millions and sent to leaders across the world, we can apologize for him.

Before our founding fathers declared independence from England, many Colonists who considered themselves loyal British citizens had to be convinced. Letters, pamphlets, essays and speeches were key to changing minds about the possibilities of an independent nation. Words expressing people’s hopes, fears and aspirations motivated the American Revolution and created one of history’s greatest countries, even with its many imperfections.

But we are no longer that “beacon on the hill”. Still, we can fight authoritarianism and come back even stronger and more committed to right our nation’s wrongs. Throughout history, the pen has proved mightier than the sword. We too can be mighty using airmail, email and the Internet… especially when we join together.

Here’s the letter we will send to leaders across the globe:

Dear Leader (we’ll insert the name of specific leaders we send it to),

You are receiving this letter because we the undersigned Americans value peace, freedom, and dignity for all. We want to offer heartfelt apologies for the following actions taken by President Trump and his administration:

-- The illegal disbanding of USAID, which is projected to lead to 9.4 million deaths by 2030, 2.5 million of whom are children under age five.
-- The unwarranted threats to attack and take over Greenland, Cuba and Canada, which destabilize world peace and international cooperation and defy the will of those people.
-- The attacking of boats in international waters near Venezuela and the murder of the people on these vessels, justified by unproven allegations of drug-running without due process.
-- The bullying of countries around the world by imposing unlawful tariffs that have impacted the global economy.
-- Launching an attack on three nuclear facilities in Iran as part of his 12-day war in June, 2025. Then doubling down by killing innocent civilians, destroying buildings and infrastructure and causing environmental damage, all without destroying Iran’s nuclear capacity.
-- Leveraging the power of the US presidency to increase Trump’s personal and family wealth.
-- Threatening the stability of NATO and the world order while insulting world leaders and allied countries.

We are writing to you because we truly regret the suffering, damage and devastating consequences of these actions. Many Americans are doing everything we can to correct the wrongs of the Trump presidency and avoid dismantling the progress made by the rules-based international order. Our hope is for a peaceful future.

Sincerely,

Note: These letters will go to foreign heads of state from the NATO Countries, NATO global partners, major, non-NATO allies, Partners for Peace and NATO Applicants, and the countries most impacted by the shutdown of US AID. This amounts to about 70 countries. We will not send letters to countries with authoritarian, repressive or corrupt regimes.
