ENFORCEMENT OF LAWS AGAINST DOG KILLING AND ABUSE IN INDIA

ENFORCEMENT OF LAWS AGAINST DOG KILLING AND ABUSE IN INDIA
The Issue
Though Indian Constitution provides Animal Protection by Article 51 Ensuring "Compassion to all Living Creatures" yet there are innumerable incidents of animal abuse happening all over the country. As Dogs are the most common species of animals found in the streets of India hence they can be easily abused or attacked. Dog Meat trade is increasing at an alarming rate in the North Eastern sates like in Tripura , Mizoram , Nagaland. "According to the dog lifters, each grownup dog fetches between Rs.2,000 and Rs.2,500 in Mizoram and Nagaland as dog`s meat is a favourite food there. They also said that they have been involved in this job for the past few months", said a Police official. But this is not limited to North Eastern region, it is happening all over the country. In kerala a report says, " Mathrubhumi on 23 Sept 2012 from Thrissur, Kerala: Dogs cut with swords reportedly for ‘weapons’ practice". In Kanyakumari district, at least half a dozen dogs were burnt and killed under the pretext of implementing the ABC( Animal Birth Control ) programme, and the fate of another 80 dogs is still not known. This is the case in many town and village panchayats, where dogs are brutally murdered and records manufactured to show that ABC surgeries were carried out", a member of Animal Life Protection Association alleged. These are just few incidents out of multifarious atrocities on Dogs .
