The Issue

Emerging mass spectrometrists from underrepresented groups may be entering science at a disadvantage due to the impacts of systemic racism. We the undersigned call upon the Diversity and Awards Committees of the American Society for Mass Spectrometry (ASMS) to find ways to use our ASMS resources to support increased participation of emerging scientists from underrepresented groups at critical points in the educational pathway. ASMS should seek to financially support students from underrepresented groups with:

  •  ASMS conference travel grants without a work requirement,
  • research experiences and mentorship for high school and undergraduate students,
  • academic support, mentorship, and mitigation of burdensome work study for undergraduates,
  •  supplemental academic support and mentorship for early career graduate students, and
  • postdoctoral experiences.

Because awards based upon minority identities might be further stigmatizing for the recipients, we encourage ASMS to make the award recipients anonymous.
