The Alphabet City Legend - Petition in Remembrance of Shenker
The Issue
Sol Shenker was one of the prominent landlords who gave back to the community. In the 70's, his grandson Marc Shenker took over the business was one of the founding owners who believed in the East Village, particularly Alphabet City. Purchasing 7 back to back buildings between avenue A and B, Marc make it his mission to cater to the artist, musicians, and theater crowd.
Allocating many of his units to artists, he gave many struggling performers free rent in order to maintain their love for the arts. Marc's buildings became popular amongst actors like Steve Buscemi and Andy Kaufman.
Marc Shenker still holds one building in the East Village. His daughter Jade Shenker still lives in the Village, but started this petition in remembrance of her father's deeds to the early adaption of the East Village. The goal is to add "Shenker Street" to East 4th Street between Avenue's A and B as a thank you to Marc for all he has done for the community.
