It’s so sad that in a extreme excellerated society, the Adoption Act over the last 40 years is completely stagnant and lifeless not growing with birth mothers and adoptees changing needs and the openness movement, nor the studies we’ve been getting on the deteriorating mental health of both parties. Why even do clinical studies on Adoptees and their Birth families, if we aren’t willing to make necessary changes to improve the relationships of both? Why are we only considering the “best interests of the child” in relation to their physical environment and needs and not considering their psychosocial, mental, emotional and biological needs as a part of that? This is grossly overdue change that’s needed. Why aren’t we considering the mental health and impact on birth mothers as an extension of the child’s best interests as well as they are a part of them and those biological parents and families live within that child and many report later that it was like reliving the trauma to hear or even just feel as babies are highly sensitive, that their biological family was torn apart so their adoptive family could get what they want. How their parents tried fighting for them and the system was completely one sided to the most successful, wealthy family who COULD afford a lawyer instead of understanding their child has biological needs and doing mediation for the sake of that child rather than treating them as property that they’re entitled to legally? Why aren’t adoptive parents being counseled on the psychosocial impact of mother and baby and being held accountable if they contribute to that units suffering and trauma more than necessary? Because they will always be a unit.
