That the Provincial Government of British Columbia Ban Campaign Signs on Public Land.
The Issue
We the signed, call upon the Provincial Government of British Columbia to ban campaign signs on public land - including both local government and highway land.
Background:
Campaign signs are a major hazard on the roads. For the same reason distracted driving is prohibited, campaign signs should not be allowed, as they are a public safety issue.
Campaign signs are a vast waste of material, most notably plastics, and wood, which costs vast amounts of environmental damage that is completely unnecessary. Vast amounts of petroleum and electricity are spent each election on sign campaigns.
Sign campaigns are unnecessary visual pollution, that are not there to enlighten in regard to politics, but are rather there to saturate the physical public sphere with paid monetary advertisements. Signs are generally not allowed in such areas in between elections, why is an exception made during elections? Does the same logic not apply in both scenarios?
Campaign signs also create an asymetrical advantage to the most monetarily backed candidates, something that enables 'special interests' to often overwhelm and take political power, creating a major threat of undue influence on elections.
