TfL and Croydon Council: Install a safe pedestrian crossing on Stanford Rd in Norbury Now

TfL and Croydon Council: Install a safe pedestrian crossing on Stanford Rd in Norbury Now

The Issue

The undersigned residents and those who work in or travel through Norbury  call on Transport for London (“TFL”) and Croydon Council to urgently provide a safe pedestrian crossing on Stanford Road, at the junction with Norton Gardens and Abingdon Road (Postcode: SW116 4TA).

Speeding and traffic

Stanford Road is a busy A‑road and a primary bus route. Known for persistent speeding, residents report “thunderous” rush hour traffic, making crossing extremely dangerous.

And yet this junction is currently unprotected, despite being used daily by children, families, older residents, and people with additional needs.

This crossing point is essential for several groups in our community:

Families and School children

Every family living south of Stanford Road and attending Norbury Manor Primary School or the Blossom House Deaf Unit must cross here. The School Street designation on Abingdon Road does not protect children once they reach Stanford Road. Traffic displaced from the School Street increases volumes and speeds on Stanford Road.

Older and Vulnerable Residents

The residents of Freeman Court, a large sheltered housing complex, rely on this crossing to safely access the nearby bus stop. Many have mobility or cognitive difficulties and may not  safely judge gaps in fast‑moving traffic.

Loss of Crossing Attendant

The community lost our beloved crossing attendant, Miss Amy, who provided 15 years of safe crossing support before her role was removed by the Council.

Main crossing area

This is also the main walking route to the corner shop on Isham Road, increasing footfall across this hazardous point.

Future Risk

A major development is planned for Turle Road, including nearly 400 new homes, a large sports facility and a big care home bringing increased traffic after years of construction‑related heavy plant.

All of which will dramatically intensify the danger on Stanford Road.

We ask TfL and Croydon Council to:

Install an appropriate, signal‑controlled or otherwise safe pedestrian crossing at the junction of Stanford Road, Norton Gardens and Abingdon Road.
And to treat this as a matter of urgency before there is a serious or tragic collision.
