Texas Tech University To Take Appropriate Action Against Racism in Student Organizations.

Texas Tech University To Take Appropriate Action Against Racism in Student Organizations.
The Issue
We students of Texas Tech University are outraged and repulsed by a racist video which was posted on an Esports student organization’s chat channel in November 2019. This video perpetuates a history of violent stereotypes against Black Americans, makes use of an anti-black slur and disseminates misleading information and lies which are tantamount to white supremacist propaganda. Following a short investigation, the organization’s executive board suspended the member responsible for posting the video for the remainder of the semester. By the time that action was taken, there were only two weeks left in the fall semester. Even following their suspension from the organization, the member has continued to actively participate. Executives of the Esports student organization have not only deleted valuable evidence with regards to harassment of members of color, but have also removed members for speaking against the members for speaking against injustice.
Our Demands:
- The Office of Student Involvement and the Office of Student Conduct take action to ban the main transgressor Jadin Crane, from the Esports student organization by January 27th.
- The Office of Student Involvement and the Office of Student Conduct take action to ban students who've supported Crane’s actions and harassed students of color who have attempted to speak up on this issue from the Esports student organization as well.
- The Office of Student Involvement move to collaborate with our task force as well as other diverse groups on campus to create and pass bi-laws for student organizations that effectively address disciplinary action surrounding incidents of this nature.
Texas Tech is supposed to be a community of respect and unity, not hate. There is only room for hatred and bigotry when we sit idly by and allow racist scandal after racist scandal to happen every couple of months. Join us in the fight to create a hate-free community where all students can feel safe.
