Tuition Fees Reimbursement (Texas State University, Spring 2020)

The Issue

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic Texas State has made the choice to close on-campus living and send residents home, cancel face-to-face classes and close facilities. Along with these factors, we are also in a nationwide "stay at home" quarantine, therefore further keeping us from using any resources and facilities found on campus.

There are a number of different fees that students are charged for each semester when paying for their tuition. Many of these fees are directly correlated to maintaining and using these facilities throughout the semester.

Due to the reasons stated above, students were only able to take advantage of the facilities and resources for 8 weeks out of the 16-week semester. Although the choices made by Texas State University were to help "flatten the curve", they should not ignore the fact students paid for an entire semester worth of resource and facility use and were only able to take full advantage for half. Therefore we are asking for refund in the amount of 50% for the eligible fees:

  • Computer Service Fee: $256
  • Library Fee: $203.84
  • Recreational Sports Fee: $94
  • Student Service Fee: $90

total: $643.84

A reimbursement of 50% would be $321.92 per student.

Although this amount is relatively low compared to the cost a full semester's tuition, this amount would greatly help students who are now financially struggling and cannot go to work due to COVID-19, and the University should take responsibility and pay back those who fund this institution in the first place.

To reiterate, we agree with the decisions of Texas State in response to COVID-19, but students still deserve some form of reimbursement and aid in these unprecedented times.
