As a deeply concerned citizen, I am pained to witness the daily euthanization of dogs in the state of Texas. Rescues across the country are working tirelessly to save these innocent lives, but they are struggling under the overwhelming numbers. We need immediate action from our lawmakers to address this heartbreaking issue.

Texas has one of the highest rates of animal euthanasia in shelters across America. According to data from Best Friends Animal Society, approximately 114,000 animals were euthanized in Texas shelters in 2019 alone (Best Friends Animal Society). This is not just an issue about animal welfare; it's about our humanity and responsibility towards these voiceless creatures.

We urgently request that the State of Texas enact laws mandating spay/neuter programs and enforce a ban on breeding until we see a significant decrease in shelter euthanasia rates. These measures have been proven effective elsewhere; for instance, after implementing similar laws, New Hampshire saw a 75% reduction in shelter intake between 1994 and 2017 (New Hampshire Federation of Humane Organizations).
