Stop the In-Person GOP State Convention in Montgomery County

The Issue

Recently, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner cancelled the Republican Party of Texas' state convention. After the cancellation, Montgomery County Judge Mark Keough has offered to host this event in The Woodlands. Having that many people attend this event could be detrimental to the population here, as there is limited testing availability as of July 9th. Holding this convention in person as opposed to a virtual method is selfish and irresponsible, especially coming from community leaders who many people look up to and hold in high regard.

Hospitals in this area have asked citizens to do a better job of social distancing, hand hygiene, and wearing protective face masks. The public plays a huge role in preserving the hospitals' capacity. The recent spike in cases in the greater Houston area has raised concern, and holding an event that could be done online in-person will certainly not help. Most clinics in the area of The Woodlands are completely booked for COVID 19 testing, or are only on a first come first serve basis. Many in Montgomery County have to go to Harris County to get tested because of the wait times. Should an even greater spike occur, there is no telling how difficult it will be to get tested.

Help us prove to these leaders that holding an in-person convention as opposed to a virtual meeting is threatening to the public health and safety of Montgomery County.
