The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) will soon make a decision that could impact millions of Texans living in rural and underserved communities.
Soon, THECB will decide to approve Sam Houston State University's (SHSU) proposed medical school. The program requires no state funding and is designed to help meet the extraordinary and urgent healthcare needs of East Texas.
We have a healthcare crisis in Texas, particularly in rural and underserved areas. With 80% of the state's counties classified as medically underserved, some of the most vulnerable Texans - the elderly, children and minority populations - are in jeopardy of not having adequate access to healthcare.
SHSU aims to help the people of East Texas by increasing the number of primary care physicians practicing in those communities.
All we need is the board’s approval to continue working to improve healthcare in these communities.
