Why this petition matters

Started by John Donovan

The Port of Corpus Christi Authority (PCCA) is proposing to build a supertanker port at Harbor Island in Port Aransas to service very large crude carriers (VLCCs), each of which holds 2 million gallons and is larger than the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. Then they'd dredge the ship channel from its current 47 feet to 75-85 feet, generating 56.5 million cubic yards of spoil, risking an oil spill next to a critical estuary, creating congestion in a narrow inlet, and endangering the fishing and tourism industries on which Port Aransas depends.

This ecological disaster could be avoided if PCCA would build an offshore terminal like the one a private company has proposed. But PCCA has taken an adversarial position and is trying to get the governor to veto any offshore projects. We're just asking the governor to let this process unfold fairly and honestly, letting the public and the permitting agencies decide which approach is best.
