Gun Free Texas State

The Issue

On June 1, 2015, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed S.B. 11, known as the "campus carry" allowing guns to be carried in all buildings on campus beginning Aug. 1, 2016.  A large portion of Texas State students, faculty, and staff are opposed to this legislation and ask Governor Abbot to reconsider the law.

We feel that the possession of weapons in our classrooms will hinder the freedom of expression that is so vital to higher education.

College campuses must be places where anyone, regardless of race, gender, religious affiliation, or sexual orientation, can feel safe and free to express themselves without fear of retaliation from their peers.  S.B. 11 has the potential to limit this freedom and needs to be reconsidered.

We are here to learn, educate, and serve our community, and we oppose allowing guns in our classrooms that may stand in our way.

We urge you to support the repeal of S.B. 11
