Educating students in school about the dangers of sexual violence

The Issue

Hey everyone, my name is Lauren Gonzalez and I'm working on an Advocacy Toolkit Project through Girls Incorporated of San Antonio!!!!!!!  Me and my partner, Mystique Hernandez, are doing our Advocacy Toolkit Project on raising awareness for sexual violence in our San Antonio schools.  Next Friday we are going to present to educational leaders in San Antonio on our subject and we want to propose an idea to them called "Teal Week".

After we conducted our survey, we realized that the dangers of sexual violence is that it's not being taught to students when they are young and thus leads to the manipulation and detrimental consequences a child faces.  How many times have we heard a survivor say that they only wish they knew what they were experiencing or that they didn't know who to tell when they are violated?  That is why we feel school districts should be teaching students about this issue and it could all start with a week of educating.  Teal Week would be a week of students starting in the 5th grade through high school learning about the dangers of sexual violence.

Students starting in the 5th grade, after they begin having conversations about their bodies changing, begin to learn: what are healthy relationships, healthy boundaries, consent, awareness of sexual violence, and the resources available to help students.  We need as much signatures as we can to show these school board officials just how important it is to educate students on sexual violence and with your signature you are helping so many future students learn about this ongoing issue.  Thank you everyone and I hope you have an amazing day!!!!!!!
