On February 10th at 6:00 pm Texas time, an intellectually disabled man was due to be executed.
Edward Lee Busby, Jr. is a 48-year-old man who carried out the murder of a retired professor from the Texas Christian University. Edward attended Special E.D. classes in school and dropped out when he was in his teens.
He and his partner, Kathleen “Kitty” Latimer, kidnapped the professor and stole her car. They drove around for a little while, Kitty riding in the back and Edward driving, then bought duct tape and wrapped the professor's nose and mouth. She died from suffocation.
Edward, without Kitty, traveled to Oklahoma to dispose of the body. When the police found him, he confessed and showed them to where the professor's body was hidden.
He pled guilty in court and has been on death row for 15 years. Kitty was only sentenced to life in prison.
He stated he had no intention to kill anyone and was only acting on Kitty's wishes.
If you would like to learn more, please read this summary of his story. (While this is from a church website, it provides information on Edward's case.)
I do not believe Edward should be freed or that he isn't guilty. However, in this specific case in which it is possible a disabled person was manipulated, please give him a chance for life and growth.
Edward's attorneys have stayed the execution, rightfully claiming he has “significant limitations in intellectual functioning.” However, this is only temporary and gives his defenders a little more time to argue their case.
It is not a guarantee Edward will be spared.
However, if you sign this petition, you will be one of many standing up for Edward's life and might help to save him.
Please don't let Edward become another taken by injustice. Thank you.
