Texas Bottle Bill
Texas Bottle Bill
The Issue
Over 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away each year with only 12 percent being recycled in the US. More specifically, Texas is known to be one of the states with the lowest rate of recycling, despite its high rates of plastic bottle waste. Recycling is the only way for there to be a decrease in waste however, I realized that the only way to make people invest in actually collecting water bottles is by giving some type of compensation.
In the state of Texas specifically, there have been attempts in the past to institute the bottle bill in Texas however they were easily stopped by major contenders such as The Coca Cola Company, Pepsi-Cola Company, National Grocers Association, and many more. Despite this, we the people need to stand firm and continue to rally against large and corrupt corporations if we want to succeed in instituting this bill.
With your signatures, we can make both the environment and the local communities around us a better place. Many benefits would come with this bottle bill aside from just reducing plastic waste, community members who turn in the bottles can receive compensation for their efforts usually being around 3 to 5 cents per bottle depending on the size. This not only helps the community as the money will come back to us but is also better for the environment as people are now incentivized to turn in the extra waste. With your help, we can make the world a better place.
