I am so incredibly proud of the Aggie spirit each and every one of you have shown over the past 24 hours. I never imagined we would reach 5,000 signatures, but it still might not be enough to save Sully, I would implore you to reach out to university officials, local media, friends and family and try to build as much public support as possible.
Like anyone else, I was appalled by the events which took place in Minneapolis last week, a black man was murdered by a police officer and justice must be served. But righteous passion shouldn't be misdirected against unworthy causes. Back in 2017, when racism reared its ugly head, the university made the decision that Sully represented much much more than his four years of service with the Confederate Army, and I hope we can all rally behind that choice. Tradition and family is what makes Texas A&M the special place that it is, and putting a penny on sully or gathering solemnly before his statue for Silver Taps, a ceremony which began with Ross, are vitally important aspects to the culture and history of our esteemed university. The school we know and love today wouldn't exist without the noble and selfless service given by Lawrence Sullivan Ross. I have recently updated our petition to include a list of Sully's greatest achievements as both governor of the great state of Texas and president of our university, please read over them so you can be informed on our late president's work.
