As a Trustee of Disability Network Hounslow ,l believe the new self-service-card-only-tills in Tesco's discriminate against many disabled people. They also cause an awful lot of people a shopping 'nightmare' too.
These include:
- those who pay in cash (carers shopping for clients)
- small business shop workers who get paid in cash- market traders who pay for their shopping in cash from takings
- older people who are suspicious of machines or feel as if they can't use them
- those with debit cards not credit cards
Disabled People disadvantaged by these self-service-card-only-tills include:
- those recovering from a stroke - have to queue for ages at a staffed till - only maybe 6 left at Tesco's Osterley, (me included) - I can't lift very much
- those who have visual impairment or are deaf - who go to a staffed till so they can lip read or get someone's advice and assistance
- people in wheelchairs
- those with general mobility issues or manual dexterity problems -especially if you can't stand for very long
- those with a limited memory span
- or those who are supported and go shopping with cash but have the services of a carer - people within the spectrum of Downs
You go, go join the queue!
You can't check your bill with a machine and there are too few shop workers who seem run off their feet to be able to help you - you've got limited time to do your transaction. The staff are fabulous at what they do. The staffed till workers have hardly any time to chat as they have a queue - so its more pressure. Going once a week for the supermarket shop can be a social occasion for many - in Tesco's Osterley it isn't now
Disability Network Hounslow is a charity for disabled people run by mainly disabled people with Members in the community. It costs just £l0 per year to join.
