Terrebonne Parish officials have allowed AT&T and it’s contractors to install 5G small cell towers and antennas throughout our parish and in our neighborhoods. Currently, there are many local governments fighting for regulations on 5G. AT&T’s plan is to have a small cell tower between every 10-12 houses. I fear that without this petition, Terrebonne Parish’s elected officials will continue to allow these poles to go up. To date, there is NO test done on 5G and humans. These are some of the first to be put in neighborhoods. We are the test. 

Currently, Terrebonne Parish has thirty (30) 5G small cell locations. Twenty-Two (22) are in residential areas, eight (8) are in commercial areas. To think you won’t have one coming up in your yard, without your consent, is very naive. Just ask Dr. Mike Watkins and his wife, Jaime. They have unsuccessfully fought against this infrastructure since September 2019. Health concerns, property value, and aesthetics were not enough to convince our local government to force removal. 

The National Toxicology Program (NTP) did a study on radio frequency radiation, or RFR, on rats. The study concluded that 2G and 3G cell phone radiation causes brain and adrenal tumors in rats. The lowest frequency used in testing was the highest allowed for for cell phone uses- the highest was four times that. Although the study states it is not comparable to the exposure in humans using a cell phone, it is comparable to the exposure humans will have near 5G sites. If AT&T continues with their plan and our officials continue to allow their infrastructure, no one will be safe from RFR. Remember, we can turn off our WiFi and our cell phones, we cannot turn these towers off.

• The FCC has not updated its standards since 1996.
• The International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) established in 1998 the “Guidelines For Limiting Exposure To Time-Varying Electric, Magnetic, and Electromagnetic Fields (up to 300 GHz)” This has not been updated.
• International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classification of extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELF EMF) in 2002  and radiofrequency radiation (RFR) in 2011 . This classification states that EMF is a possible human carcinogen (Group 2B).
