Terminate Public Funding of Nebraska Humane Society For Unethical Practices

The Issue

This is not just a petition; it’s an outcry for justice. A family's beloved pet, Chuchi, a dear family member for over a decade, went missing while they were away. Despite being identified on the Nebraska Humane Society (NHS) website under a different name, Dolores, the family arrived at the society too late; Chuchi had been adopted out mere half an hour prior. The NHS refused to reach out to the new owners or address what can only be regarded as their grave mistake. Now, an elderly dog is stuck in an unfamiliar home, and her original family suffers from her absence.

The case of Chuchi is not an isolated incident but symptomatic of a recurring issue plaguing the NHS. The organization routinely fails to carry out due diligence in identifying the true owners of animals that come under its care before they are adopted out. Ostensibly positioned to protect animals, the NHS's current system shows a concerning level of inefficiency and unaccountability.

We are therefore calling for an end to taxpayer funding of the Nebraska Humane Society and urge reconsideration of their non-profit designation. The continual misuse of funds, combined with their negligently unethical system, causes inadvertent harm to families and their pets. Further investigation into their operations and practices is needed to ensure that errors with such devastating emotional consequences should never happen again.

End the suffering. Demand transparency. Sign this petition to terminate public funding for the Nebraska Humane Society until they demonstrate significant improvements to their ownership verification system.
