The Issue

Imagine a farm filled with healthy, vibrant ostriches, unconsciously suffering a fate sealed not by sickness, but by bureaucracy. This is the unfortunate story of the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, BC. Despite no evidence tying Avian influenza to food safety concerns, and in flagrant disregard of Canada.ca's own guidelines, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) mandated the culling of these magnificent birds.

At the helm of this egregious decision is Paul MacKinnon, President of the CFIA, whose actions have not only undermined the food supply but also encroached on fundamental human rights. The court ruling, under CFIA recommendations, relied on fears rather than facts. Their own resources highlight that there is no evidence that fully cooked meat, milk, or eggs can transmit the Avian flu to humans. Yet, despite these assurances, the picturesque Universal Ostrich Farm faced devastation without a chance for 3rd party verification.

With these actions, CFIA prohibited independent testing for Avian flu, removing any possibility of the farm demonstrating the health of its livestock. The ostriches were healthy, a fact made all the more tragic as the CFIA decided not to explore this avenue. This blanket prohibition sidelines transparency and places unchecked power over animal farming practices.

We call for the immediate termination of Paul MacKinnon from his role as President of the CFIA. His leadership during this incident exemplifies an alarming disconnection between bureaucratic policy and the realities of animal husbandry and food safety. This is not just an issue about ostriches; it represents a chilling overreach affecting farm owners and consumers alike, raising troubling questions about governmental policies and their impact.

By signing this petition, you become part of a movement demanding accountability, transparency, and responsibility from our nation's food safety agencies. Let's ensure future decisions are guided by evidence and in alignment with national guidelines, supporting our farmers and preserving individual rights. Please sign and share this petition to stand up against injustice.
