The Issue

On May 1, 2023, an incident occurred at Fayetteville-Manlius High School (FMHS) involving Jake Held and officers (Damon’s nd Golden)from the Town of Manlius Police Department. CCTV footage from FMHS clearly shows Officer Damon initiating physical contact by shoving Jake at the beginning of their interaction and attempting to snatch his wrists. Subsequently, Officer Golden shoves past Officer Damon and violently slammed Jake through a lunch table and illegally detained him, violating his 4th amendment right to protection against illegal seizures.  Despite this clear evidence, the official reports submitted by the officers involved contain numerous inaccuracies and falsehoods. Notably, Officer Golden's report includes details about events leading up to his interaction with Jake, despite the fact that he did not enter the cafeteria until after Officer Damon had already shoved Jake.

Further complicating the situation, the Town of Manlius Police Department, specifically Lieutenant Snyder and Chief Cassalia, have been actively preventing the release of unredacted body camera footage and audio recordings. This obstruction is believed to be an attempt to conceal the misconduct of their officers. The refusal to release this critical evidence suggests a concerted effort to protect the officers involved from accountability for their actions during the incident with Jake Held. This has raised significant concerns about transparency and integrity within the department.
