Our community is devastated by the actions of Chad Denham, an Animal Control Officer with the Michigan City Police Department (MCPD). Recent videos have surfaced showing Denham committing acts of cruelty against animals in his custody, including dogs & cats; additional allegations also now involve raccoons. These disturbing images and first-hand testimonies have been shared widely, and they have deeply affected animal lovers in our area, as well as overwhelmed our local shelters with sick and dying animals, whom Denham refused to transport for care. 

The role of an Animal Control Officer should primarily be to ensure the safety and well-being of animals, not to harm them. However, despite clear evidence of abuse, the Michigan City Police Department has dismissed these allegations and has taken no action to hold Officer Denham accountable for his actions. This is unacceptable and sets a dangerous precedent for how cases of animal cruelty are handled by those who are sworn to protect them.

Animal cruelty is not just a violation of ethics; it is a crime. According to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), intentional acts of harm against animals not only cause them unimaginable suffering but also reflect a greater potential for societal violence. Allowing an individual who has been caught on video mistreating animals to continue in a role where he is entrusted with their care is irresponsible and dangerous.

It is crucial that the Michigan City Police Department take immediate action by terminating Chad Denham from his position. Not only will this provide justice for the animals that have suffered under his care, but it will also send a strong message to the community that animal cruelty will not be tolerated. Moreover, it will restore faith in the MCPD and reassure the public that the department is committed to upholding the law and protecting all members of our community, pets included.

We also ask that the LaPorte County Prosecutor's Office be consulted for criminal charges against Officer Denham.
