STOP PRIVATE BUSINESSES FROM USING YOUR TAX DOLLARS TO TEACH TENNIS FOR PROFIT
The Issue
The newly formed "Oahu Tennis Association/Academy" is a "FOR PROFIT" organization masquerading as a "nonprofit" on the tax paid tennis courts of Oahu. They have recently approached the department of Parks and Recreation and obtained permits to reserve public tennis courts for significant amounts of time during peak hours. This displaces hard working, taxpaying, local residents and their kids from enjoying family time, playing with friends, or just blowing off steam.
Paid tennis instruction is forbidden on public courts except for nonprofit organizations. The USTA (United States Tennis Association) has supported local and national tennis in several ways over the years by organizing leagues, clinics, group lessons, and after-school programs at affordable costs. The Oahu Tennis ACADEMY (OTA) as it sounds is a business. An academy which belongs in a country club using private courts. They should not be profiting on the backs of ordinary citizens using public property.

clearly shows how you can create a private FOR PROFIT business charging country club prices on PUBLIC property. One hour of tennis instruction for $120.00 is NOT nonprofit, it is FOR PROFIT!
To date the OTA has permits to use four of the Diamondhead tennis courts almost daily for several hours, as well as nearly half of the Ala Moana Tennis courts. The USTA which is over one hundred times larger uses less courts for less time and serves more people.
The OTA has pulled a fast one on the Division of Parks and Recs but not recreational tennis and pickleball players. They followed the letter of the law by forming a nonprofit organization, obtaining permits, and reserving courts. However the spirit of the law has been violated and the unsuspecting government official signing off on these permits was simply doofed. Honest tax payers will not allow this as there is strength in numbers.
