Remove the 15 hour a week cap on undergraduates working for UOB

At current undergrads are restricted to working just 15 hours each week during term time. The new TSS online time-sheet allows an individual to claim 15 hours of UOB paid work weekly (across all roles). This means that as a student ambassador we are extremely limited as to what we can do and the impact we have. 

  • No longer can we travel to an external event, commit our efforts to it and then travel back later in the evening or the next morning.
  • No longer can we focus on one sole project, knowing the ins and outs, and deliver this as again it risks exceeding 15 hours. 
  • No longer can we sign up to the work we enjoy most- we must plan ahead and predict the hours a job may involve to then sacrifice others in order to do it. 

As students, we are capable of balancing our time. We are able to judge our work-load and commit ourselves to suitable levels of paid work. A 15 hour cap appears appropriate say during exam season, however having this throughout the year is unreasonable. 

There is a need for alteration to this cap- be it increasing this to 20 hours or enforcing it only during exam periods. However, at current this 15 hour restriction risks impacting the quality of work completed, pressuring the team to employ and train more ambassadors and risks forcing those individuals who can and do balance work-load to find work elsewhere.
