Temporary Moratorium in Mount Pleasant
The Issue
Mount Pleasant Needs temporary TIME OUT from large scale Development . Why? Too many huge projects and not enough attention to thoughtfully consider the impacts:
- where and how much we build
- what natural areas we protect
- how development affects drainage, flooding, traffic, infrastructure, & Town services
- who’s footing the bill to protect potential negative future impacts - taxpayers or developers?
The Town is taking steps to strengthen important Town codes to protect steep slopes and wetlands BUT, while this work is underway, large scale development is being accelerated. Taking a temporary “TIME OUT” protects the Town and taxpayers from potential legal action, infrastructure costs and, irreversible damage to the Town’s natural resources.
Mount Pleasant should use this pause to:
- Strengthen and coordinate the steep slopes and wetlands laws
- Implement important recommendations from the 2022 Comprehensive Plan that have not yet made it into the Town Code
- Review protections for trees, open space, drainage and environmentally sensitive land
- Make sure zoning and development rules address the capacity of roads, sewers and other infrastructure
- Consider the long-term cost of growth and its effect on Town services and taxpayers
- Make sure all of these rules work together before additional large projects are approved
This is not about stopping development. It is about taking a reasonable pause on large development while Mount Pleasant gets its rules right.
Once a large project is approved and land is cleared or developed, we can't simply go back and apply stronger protections later.
Get the rules right first. Then make decisions about large development.
Sign this petition asking the Mount Pleasant Town Board for an immediate temporary moratorium on large-scale development while it completes these important updates.
