Temporarily Rename Russian Hill to Ukrainian Hill in San Francisco
The Issue
Living on Russian Hill in San Francisco has been an integral part of my life the last few years. However, recent global events have transformed this place into a painful reminder of the ongoing wanton murder in Ukraine. Russia at the same time is also attempting to erase Ukrainian culture (has been happening for decades) via commandeering aspects of their culture, changing their language, blowing up cultural and religious centers, and variety of other methods. This symbolic move would in addition give the opportunity to draw attention to this attempted cultural annihilation. Complaints from Russia would allow the dialogue to open more widely as to what they themselves are attempting to do PERMANENTLY do in Ukraine.
The name 'Russian Hill' is now more than a geographical label—it’s a symbol of hurt and a stark reminder of the atrocities inflicted upon the Ukrainian people. This war has uprooted over 5 million Ukrainians, with countless others affected by violence and instability. As a community that prides itself on diversity and inclusivity, it is crucial for San Francisco to reflect these values and stand in solidarity with those who are suffering.
Temporarily renaming Russian Hill to Ukrainian Hill until action is taken would send a powerful message of support to the Ukrainian community both locally and globally. It is not merely a gesture but a statement that San Francisco stands against oppression and with those fighting for their freedom. This change would acknowledge the profound impacts of the war on displaced families and individuals and demonstrate our collective commitment to justice and unity.
Local governments have the ability to honor histories and cultures through place names. As advocates for a more inclusive world, changing the name of Russian Hill temporarily would serve as a beacon of hope and reinforce the values that San Francisco stands for—compassion, solidarity, and acceptance while also drawing attention to Russia’s attempted erasure of Ukrainian culture.
This is a small yet significant step we can take that can have immense positive influences on our community. Let us come together to make this change possible and transform a symbol of distress into a sign of resilience and hope.
