Temporarily Relocate Polar Bears from Lincoln Park Zoo During Heat Wave

Temporarily Relocate Polar Bears from Lincoln Park Zoo During Heat Wave
The Issue

Growing up in Chicago, I've always cherished my visits to the Lincoln Park Zoo. As a native, the adversity of our city's weather—particularly the scorching heat—has been a constant in our lives. Yet, these conditions, intensified by climate change, have become more unbearable and it deeply saddens me to witness the polar bears struggling within these circumstances.
These magnificent creatures, meant for the icy terrains of the Arctic, find themselves in an environment that's not only foreign but unfavorable for their well-being during our summer months. Observing them constantly dirty, lacking proper cooling options, is both physically unpleasant and emotionally unsettling. The sight of polar bears should fill us with awe, not feelings of pitiful sorrow.
The Lincoln Park Zoo, an esteemed establishment in our city, is known for its dedication to animal welfare. However, it's vital to acknowledge the unique needs of each species, especially in times of climate anomalies. While Chicago natives may be used to the heat, our polar bear residents are not; their enclosures are no longer an adequate mimicry of their natural habitat during our severe heat waves.
We are urging the Lincoln Park Zoo administration to take immediate action by relocating these polar bears to a more suitable environment, at least temporarily during the peak summer months or heat waves. Such a move would ensure their health, safety, and happiness, and uphold the zoo's commitment to impeccable animal care.
This petition reflects not only my personal belief in compassionate treatment for all beings but also a collective concern from the community. Let us not be bystanders to their suffering. Please join me in ensuring our polar bears receive the humane treatment they deserve by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference for the lives of these incredible animals by advocating for their relocation to a cooler refuge until our heat subsides.
