Expand Temple University's Patrol Area / Jurisdiction

The Issue

With the recent on-going and persistent attacks, burglaries, and muggings of Temple University students, we believe that the area in which the Temple University Police are currently patrolling should be expanded.

In a recent e-mail regarding the safety of Temple University's students, Jim Creedon, the Senior Vice President for Construction, Facilities and Operations, stated that, "Temple Police patrol to 16th street. They patrol as far north as Diamond and as far south as Jefferson. Outside of that area, the Philadelphia Police patrol and respond to calls for assistance."

We are calling for a collaboration between the Temple University Police and Philadelphia Police Department to help expand the area the Temple University Police are allowed to patrol. With many students living west of 16th Street and north of Diamond Street (especially on blocks such as Park Avenue, Gratz Street, etc.), we collectively would feel more safe knowing that the Temple University Police are allowed to patrol these areas.

We understand and are aware that there may be jurisdictional concerns that arise from a change in the area Temple University Police are able to patrol and we also understand that there is no way to eliminate all possible threats to student safety. However, what we are doing is asking these two departments to work together to not only keep students safe, but to help us regain the essential sense that we are safe attending Temple University.

Thank you.
