Telstra has been the sole service provider for many regions of Cape York Queensland since the cellular age was born.

Since moving to the remote community of Lockhart River, Queensland in 2017, like many others, I have fallen victim to the false advertised coverage and sales of Telecommunications giant, Telstra.  Many workers who have moved to the Cape York community have signed into mobile plans in excess of $100 a month before realizing they have locked themselves into a brick contract.

Telstra clearly show a 3G coverage on their coverage map online and strongly agree with the map when consulting over the phone.  I utilize three different cellular contracts, all with Telstra and all experiencing call drop outs with terrible quality and a data download speed of 0.10mbps best on average - this makes the simplest of tasks an excruciating chore.  Good luck google searching or even internet banking.

2018 brought a thunderstorm which struck the Telstra tower of our community leaving us unable to communicate with family and loved ones for months.  The tower was deemed unsafe to climb for repair due to 30 years of corrosion being a town by the beach.  Telstra then pushed forward the major operation of replacing the tower with a new, taller tower with current technology - promising 4G.  

By December 2018, the new tower has been 90% rectified with segments still laying on ground by the base of tower.  Old tower was knocked down into Traditional Aboriginal Land and still lays there to this day - I am a worker in the community and leaving zero environment impact is crucial.  Both towers are still in the same condition today.

As the contractors left for end of year holidays, they were proud in what they accomplished and shook hands believing they had benefited the community.  To be honest the new tower service and coverage is worse than the previous old rusted tower.  For a couple of months the best service we experienced was with a mobile tower trailer called the "sat cow".  If its possible to achieve this service on a mobile trailer why hasn't it been installed on a million dollar tower??

Many people in the community of 800 have tried to downgrade but Telstra is firm on their beliefs of good coverage to the community and will charge $1000 or more for termination fee to downgrade plan to basic.  Since new tower has been rectified our community have experienced many natural disasters from storms/floods to cyclones.  Family have been terrified trying to contact ensuring okay.

Service providers are rolling out 5G and Telstra can not even provide 3G.  Makes business work painful and unbearable at times.  This is not very reassuring with the rapid growth of technology and seems like our needs are forgotten or too little.

Telstra hearing my complaints, sent a 'smart antenna' for $1000 to rectify my issues which they happily added to my bill.  This has made zero difference and if anything has been a struggling game of phone-tag trying to send back so I may not be charged..

I hope this petition is seen and makes a difference.  I would like to see Telstra be accountable for their promises and follow through, if not, can OPTUS or another provider step in and do the job.
